Group Therapy Proposal Soldiers Veterans who Served in OEF/OIF with Combat-Related PTSD Abby Thompson Indiana State University Introduction Over the last decade, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have drastically increased the need for effective mental health services and treatment for U.S. veterans and service members, especially those suffering from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Nearly 1.5 million American service members have been deployed in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) since the attack on the Twin Towers in September 2001 (Price, Gros, Strachan, Ruggiero, Acierno, 2013). Approximately 25% of soldiers and wounded warriors returning home from OEF/OIF present with mental illness due to combat-related violence and other trauma exposure (Steinberg Eisner, 2015). According to Price and colleagues (2013), OEF/OIF soldiers and veterans are at greater risk for developing mental illness compared to others who served in past military operations. The current group will be closed and will consist of eight soldiers and/or veterans that served in OEF/OIF with combat-related PTSD. Having fewer members in the group will allow participants to develop and build trusting relationships with the other group members. It will also allow ample opportunity to share their stories in confidentiality and within a safe environment with others that have been through similar experiences. Dust Mite I am the common North American Dust Mite. I live almost in every house in the world. Most people do not even know that I am living all over there home because I cannot be seen with the naked eye. I mostly eat dead skin flakes that fall from humans liven in the house. I am generally two hundred and fifty to three hundred microns in length. That is really small that no one can see me without using a strong microscope. I have eight hairy legs that I use to travel in the house to find dead skin flakes to eat. When I eat dead skin flakes I generally leave waste droppings which have a protein that many people are allergic to. When people go to doctors whey they are sick and the doctor tells them that they are allergic to dust. The doctors just don’t want to tell the patients that they are allergic to my droppings. I mostly spend my time inside a mattress because that is where most of the dead skin flakes are. They are mostly there because people spend a lot of time lying on the mattress sleeping where they just fall off. The scientists have decided to give me my own scientific name. My own scientific name is Dermatophagoides farinae. When I start my day the first thing I do is go around the house to try to find dead skin flakes lying around the carpet or inside the mattress. Most people don’t know that they are sleeping on top of millions of little tiny dust mites. When the female lays eggs, the little baby dust mites are first a larva. Once they have grown up more then they look like regular mites with there strong shells. After that I have found the skin flakes I start to eat them. Hundreds of my friends come with me to find and eat skin because we are all hungry to eat. We dust mites never leave alone we always go to find the dust and skin flakes in big groups because it is always to go in groups because we feel safer when we are in groups. Most people don’t know that a used mattress contains an estimated one hundred thousand to ten million dust mites inside. One thing that most people find that is real nasty is that ten percent of the weight of a two year old pillow is accumulated by dead dust mites and their droppings. We dust mites are every where we can find dust which are full of dead skin flakes. Many people are disgusted after they learn how many dust mites are inside your bed or in your house in general. We dust mites have a really busy life. We dust mites look pretty gruesome. A dust mite has eight hairy legs, no antennae, a mouth part group in front of the body and a rough translucent shell. If you put all those characteristics together you got a fearsome appearance. We might be microscopic but we have many characteristics. If we were bigger many people would be terrified of how gruesome we look. People are not scared of us dust mites because we cannot be seen by them. To eradicate corruption we require individuals who are incorruptible and, undoubtedly, what produces such individuals is spirituality. There is a saying that violence begins in the mind. What changes the heart and mind for the better is spirituality. When an airplane takes off, it leaves behind everything and reaches a higher plane, at which point it is capable of flying towards its destination without any hurdles. Similarly, a spiritual seeker is able to fly to a higher plane where he is free of negative influences. There are two aspects to spirituality: theory and practice. Basically, spirituality is a non-materialistic approach to lifes issues as opposed to the other approach that is based on materialistic interest. One who is spiritual gives more importance to non-material values, and it is only his non-materialistic approach that can eradicate corruption, since the root cause of corruption is the materialistic approach. There is a saying: A wise man is one who knows the relative value of things. The wise person is one, moreover, who has a predictable character. All these qualities stem from spiritual training. It is the responsibility of reformers, therefore, to train people to become duty-conscious for the duty-conscious person can never involve himself in any negative activity such as corruption. Spirituality helps to keep emotions under control and brings peace of mind. An education system that includes spiritual values in instruction will help students imbibe eternal values and truths that enable them to not only develop their intellectual capacity but also to fulfill their role as responsible human beings in society. The materialistic person is more concerned with material than with spiritual goals or values. Corruption is a phenomenon of the materialistic society, while spirituality is the phenomenon of evolved persons. It is only such persons who can build a non-corrupt society. Spirituality and corruption cannot go together. If a society is to be free of corruption, it has to be made up of evolved or at least, evolving individuals who have a fairly strong sense of what is right and what is wrong. This is the only solution to the problem of corruption. This is the right beginning and only the right beginning can make it possible to reach the desired goal.
